Where do you see yourself in five years’ age? No longer working in education, 40% of UK schoolteachers surveyed by a teachers’ association responded.
It may sound like a cliched interview question, but the National Education Union says that the answer was demonstrated by a “culture of fear” in schools.
Its survey of 8,600 members received most of those leaving blamed “huge workloads and excessive accountability”.
Education Secretary Damian Hinds has promised to tackle the workload issue.
One teacher, who responded to the union’s State of Education survey produced at its annual discussion in Liverpool, said: “Working 70 hours per week for many years has necessitated my state and family have suffered.
