Streaming monstrous buys titles to compose first ever screen adjustment of Colombian scribes influential 1967 mystical realist novel
Netflix has acquired the rights to Gabriel Garcia Marquez’s influential One Hundred Years of Solitude to procreate the first screen modification of the author’s 1967 masterpiece.
The streaming companionship announced on Wednesday that the book will be adapted into a Spanish-language series and filmed primarily in the Nobel prize-winning author’s home country of Colombia, with Garcia Marquez’s sons, Rodrigo Garcia and Gonzalo Garcia Barcha, serving as manager producers.
Acquiring privileges to change One Hundred Times of Solitude has been a hard-fought contest. Garcia said that “his fathers” was sceptical of the sprawling mystical realist novel’s capacity to fit within a traditional film organize, and wanted the storey to be told in Spanish.
” For decades our papa was reluctant to sell the cinema privileges to One Hundred Times of Solitude because he believed that it could not be made under the time limitations of a feature film, or that raising it in different languages other than Spanish would not do it justice ,” Garcia said.” But under the present golden age of serial, with the different levels of talented writing and directing, the cinematic caliber of the information contained, and the agreement by worldwide publics of programs in foreign lingos, the time has not been possible to be better .”
One Hundred Years of Solitude follows the Buendia dynasty, founders of the rural areas and isolated town of Macondo, and fuses fantastical and allegorical points such as floods of yellow-bellied grows, alchemy and religious supernaturals, with realism, history and literary pastiche. It became a defining study of supernatural pragmatism and one of “the worlds largest” celebrated Latin American fictions of the 20 th century, having exchanged an estimated 47 m emulates and been translated into 46 languages.
Netflix has only understood substantial success with Spanish-language originals, such as the Oscar-winning film, Roma, and the Pablo Escobar series, Narcos.
One Hundred Years of Solitude will not be the first Garcia Marquez work to be adapted for the screen. The author’s 1985 novel Love in the Time of Cholera was adapted for film in 2007, to be determined by Mike Newell and starring Giovanna Mezzogiorno, Javier Bardem and Benjamin Bratt. The 1981 novella, Chronicle of a Death Foretold, has been adapted for both movie and Broadway musical.
Garcia Marquez won the Nobel prize winner for literature in 1982. He died in 2014.
